Why this site exists
Running a business alone means you're the marketer, bookkeeper, designer, editor, and ops team, often before your first coffee. AI tools genuinely help here, but the internet is drowning in "best AI tools" listicles that are just affiliate link farms wearing a trench coat, recycling the same 30 tools with zero actual opinion attached.
Solos Gems is one person's ongoing testing notes on what's actually worth paying for when you don't have a team to absorb a bad software decision (or a bad Slack thread about it). Every review here covers three things: what the tool actually does, what it costs once you're past the free tier, and who it's a bad fit for, because "who shouldn't buy this" is the part most review sites conveniently skip.
How reviews are built
Pricing and feature details are checked against current vendor documentation at the time of writing. Vendors change pricing often, so always confirm current cost on the vendor's own site before subscribing. Where a review includes hands-on impressions, screenshots, workflow notes, time-on-task, that's marked explicitly and is based on direct use of the tool, not generated from marketing copy.
How we rank
Every tool gets a score out of 10, weighted across four things: value for a solo operator relative to price, real-world capability, ease of use and setup friction, and how safely you can trial it, a generous free tier scores better than "no free plan, pay first." Nothing on this site scores a 10; if a tool were flawless for solopreneurs, it wouldn't need a review, it would need a headline.
The overall ranking (#1–43, shown on the homepage and at the top of every review) is a single cross-category list, not a per-category leaderboard, so a design tool can outrank a bookkeeping tool if it delivers more value for the price relative to what a solopreneur actually needs. When a new review is added or an existing score is revised, every tool's position is recalculated and marked with how many spots it moved up or down since the last update. The current #1 gets a gem badge next to its name.

There's also a live headline ticker under the top banner pulling real AI news, which occasionally scrolls past a story about a tool we've reviewed, so you can watch the ecosystem eat itself in near-real time.
DeathStack is the graveyard: real AI tools and services that shut down, with what killed them and an interesting fact, narrated like a horror movie because betting your business on a single AI vendor is, frankly, a horror movie. News is that same live feed as its own page, auto-pulled from actual outlets, tagged for controversy and for anything that mentions a tool we cover, no editor cherry-picking headlines. And Submit is where you tell us about a tool we've missed, or nominate the next entry for the graveyard.
