The Realm Map
Every marker on this map is a real country. Most days it's sized by real AI-related news coverage volume pulled live from GDELT, a free global news-monitoring database. GDELT's free tier gets overloaded fairly often, so on the days its feed comes back empty, the map instead falls back to a small, hand-verified registry of real AI tool headquarters, sized by live Wikipedia search interest for that tool. Either way, click a glowing region to open its quest log: a D&D-flavored caption, a generated illustration, and a plain read of what the numbers actually mean.
Three data layers feed this page. The map layer (News Mentions below) is geographic. Search interest and build activity are not tied to a single country (neither Wikipedia nor GitHub expose that), so they run as global rankings in the columns below instead of pretending to be something they're not.

News mention volume normally comes from GDELT's free public API, a 3-day rolling window of global news coverage. GDELT's free tier is aggressively rate-limited and goes down for stretches at a time, when that happens this page switches the map to a small, hand-verified registry of real AI tool headquarters, sized by live Wikipedia view counts for that tool, rather than showing an empty map or invented numbers. Search interest comes from the Wikimedia Pageviews API. Build activity comes from GitHub's public search API, filtered to repos tagged "ai" created in the last 30 days. None of this is simulated, all of it can shift as the underlying data does, and low or missing numbers for a region reflect the data source, not a judgment about that region.
