NotebookLM vs. Perplexity Pro
NotebookLM (#2, 8.6/10) and Perplexity Pro (#36, 5.0/10) are both AI research tools, but they answer different questions. NotebookLM is free (paid tiers from $7.99/month via Google AI plans) and grounds every answer strictly in documents you upload yourself. Perplexity Pro ($16.60-$20/month) searches the live open web and cites public sources. They're not really substitutes, most solopreneurs doing both competitive research and internal document work will get more value running both than picking one.

If your research work is mostly digesting your own documents, client materials, meeting transcripts, past research, NotebookLM's free tier covers it without a subscription. If you need live, cited web search and don't already have that through ChatGPT or Claude, Perplexity Pro fills that specific gap, but check whether your existing AI subscription already includes browsing before paying for a second one.
